NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

Later on Wednesday, the network backtracked from its original story.

At 6:34 pm, NBC Nightly News sent out a tweet of a Pete Williams report that one suspect in the Paris attack had been killed while two others were in custody.

The report by Williams cited two unnamed senior U.S. counterterrorism officials as sources.

At 8 pm, during MSNBC's "All In" with Chris Hayes, Williams walked back the report saying, "we just don't know what the situation is in France tonight."

"We were told earlier this evening from two U.S. counterterrorism officials that one person was dead and two have been arrested," Williams said on the broadcast. "Other U.S. officials," he added, "say they haven't been told that."

Williams' story on the NBC News website Wednesday night reported that US counterterrorism officials cannot be certain what the status is of the three suspects.

NBC News did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
